Tuesday brought residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves inhaling severely hazardous air that was classified as the "critical" level.

Extremely High Air Quality Levels

Multiple areas of the capital showed an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which translates to 10x the recommended threshold recommended by the WHO.

In some locations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1,800, equating to fifteen to twenty times exceeding acceptable levels.

Firecracker Prohibition and Current Changes

Since 2020, authorities had implemented a complete ban on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the deadly haze that engulfs the city as the cold season approaches.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the newly elected city government appealed to the highest court to seek a modification of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously criticized by environmentalists as being only about 30% less polluting – as a balance between "cultural practices and public health".

Legal Decision and Enforcement

Despite concerns of environmental and health campaigners, the court approved the appeal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific time windows throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was extensive flouting of the regulated periods across the capital, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Several recording stations throughout the city recorded contamination spiking around the night hours to the most severe measurements recorded during the festival in at least recent memory.

International Consequences

The proliferation of fireworks during the festival also triggered a controversy with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistani Punjab province partially attributing declining air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles coming from neighboring India following the celebrations.

Chronic Pollution Crisis

Extremely elevated concentrations of air contamination in the capital have continued as a significant problem for fifteen-plus years, with the problem showing no improvement.

Around the festival period, the concentration of dangerous airborne contaminants in the air has been observed to shoot up to seventy percent above the worst records ever documented in China's capital, which was once regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Multiple Contamination Sources

This crisis in the capital is caused by a convergence of multiple factors including transportation pollution, dust, building projects, garbage fires and smoke from agricultural fires in adjacent regions of farming communities.

In these regions, agricultural workers regularly burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, generating dangerous smog that becomes contained over the city as colder air descends.

Public Health and Financial Toll

The economic and health impact on the roughly thirty-three million residents calling home the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to various studies.

This pollution causes elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can potentially cause malignancies.

The pollution is projected to be causing 10,000 premature deaths each year in the city.
